Our decks are the perfect setting for spending time with family and friends, peaceful solitude, and times for reflection. But how can you enjoy it if your deck has taken a beating from the harsh weather conditions in Canada? Lucky for you, Vesta Painting is here to help you win the fight against Mother Nature.

A deck that’s well-maintained and attractive can significantly enhance the aesthetic value and functionality of your outdoor space. However, the benefits of painting your deck extend far beyond enhancing its appearance. In fact, a painted deck offers a host of valuable features that can prolong its lifespan and protect it from the unforgiving outdoor elements. From UV rays to rain and humidity, weather elements, and pesky insects, your deck is at risk of significant deterioration without proper protection.

There are 2 options you can choose from when finishing your deck: painting or staining. Painting your deck provides the best level of protection from sunlight and moisture, and can last up to 10 years. Staining on the other hand, shows off the natural beauty of the wood giving your deck an eloquent look. Staining still provides protection from moisture, but not as much protection from UV rays when compared to paint. This means you need to stain your deck every 2-5 years, depending on the type of stain used.

Even if your deck isn’t that large, a lot of work is required to properly paint or stain it from the preparation to the application. It takes time to ensure the finish you want. Preparation involves a few steps:

  • Power washing (if necessary)
  • Scraping
  • Sanding
  • Caulking
  • Priming

At times a chemical stripper may have to be applied for preparation. For example, if a transition from a paint to a stain is being made. Then comes the application. Paints and solid stains can be applied through brushing, rolling, or spraying. Whereas semi-transparent and translucent stains needs to be applied by brush, although there are accepted methods to apply by rolling with a brushed finish. We know it is a bit of a daunting task, but don’t worry. Vesta Painting are your deck painting experts and we will make it easy for you.
